Practical tips

• Leave a long end at the beginning and end of each piece for sewing

• Sew seams with RS facing, using mattress stitch.


Tension

24 sts and 32 rows for 10 x 10 cm tension square (not essential).

Bear: Body

With yarn A, cast on 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: [Kfb] 10 times. 20 sts
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: [Kl, kfb] 10 times. 30 sts
Row 5: Purl.
Row 6: [K2, kfb] 10 times. 40 sts
Rows 7-17: Starting with a prow, work 11 rows in St st.
Row 18: [K2, k2tog] 10 times. 30 sts
Rows 19-27: Starting with a prow, work 9 rows in St st.
Row 28: [Kl, k2tog] 10 times. 20 sts
Rows 29-31: Starting with a p row, work 3 rows in St st.
Row 32: [K2tog] 10 times. 10 sts
Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

Bear: Ears (make two)

With yarn A, cast on 12 sts. Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off. Stitch sides together to make it into a semi-circle.

Bear: Muzzle

With yarn D, cast on 8 sts.
Row 1 (WS): [Pfb] 8 times. 16 sts
Row 2: Knit.
Cast off.

Bear: Trunks

With yarn B, work as for body to row 11. 40 sts
Break yarn B. Change to yarn C.
Rows 12-14: Knit.
Cast off k-wise.

Bear: Arms (make two)

With yarn A, cast on 12 sts and work 9 rows, starting with a p (WS) row. Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

Bear: Legs (make two)

With yarn A, cast on 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: [Kfb] 10 times. 20 sts
Rows 3-7: Starting with a prow, work 5 rows in St st.
Row 8: K7, [k2tog] 3 times, k7. 17 sts
Row 9: Purl.
Row 10 (ankle): K7, k3tog, k7. 15 sts
Rows 11-13: Starting with a prow, work 3 rows in St st.
Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

Bear: Ring

With yarn E, cast on 12 sts.
Rows 1-8: Starting with a p (WS) row, work 8 rows in St st.
Leaving yarn E attached to work, change to yarn C
Rows 9-14: Starting with a p row, work 6 rows in St st.
Leaving yarn C attached to work, change to yarn E.
Repeat rows 1-14 three more times. Cast off.

Bear: To make up

With fastened-off yarn end of body, seam body halfway. With cast-on yarn end, work a gathering thread along cast-on edge and draw tightly. Sew up body a little further, stuff and close body. Seam trunks, encase body and secure the piece to body with stitches around. Attach ears. Sew side seam of muzzle, insert stuffing and attach cast-off edge to face. Attach larger eyes. With yarn H, embroider nose and mouth. Seam ring, stuff, wrap body with the piece and connect both ends. Sew side seam of legs and stuff. Thread yarn A and insert needle from sole, take it out from ankle and repeat. Pull thread to flatten sole and shape ankle. Attach cast-off edge of leg to body. Seam arms and, without stuffing, attach them to body. Stitch hand ends to body so that they wrap over the ring.

Penguin: Body

With yarn F, cast on 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: [Kfb] 10 times. 20 sts
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: K2, [kfb, k2] 6 times. 26 sts
Rows 5-7: Starting with a prow, work 3 rows in St st.
Row 8: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog. 24 sts
Rows 9-11: Starting with a prow, work 3 rows in St st.
Row 12: [K2, k2tog] 6 times. 18 sts
Rows 13-19: Starting with a p row, work 7 rows in St st.
Row 20: [Kl, k2tog] 6 times. 12 sts
Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

Penguin: Wings (make two)

With yarn F, cast on 12 sts.
Rows 1-3: Starting with a p (WS) row, work 3 rows in St st.
Row 4: [K2, k2tog] 3 times. 9 sts
Rows 5-6: Starting with a p row, work 2 rows in St st.
Row 7: Pl, [p2tog] 4 times. 5 sts
Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

Penguin: Beak

With yarn I, cast on 4 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: Skpo, k2tog. Pass first st over second and fasten off.

Penguin: Feet (make two)

With yarn G, cast on 4 sts.
Rows 1-4: Knit 4 rows.
Cast off k wise.

Penguin: Ring

Use double pointed needles for easier handling. Slide stitches to the other end when necessary if the required yarn is at the wrong end to start the row.
With yarn C, cast on 7 sts.
Rows 1-4: Starting with a p (WS) row, work 4 rows in St st.
Leaving yarn C attached to work, change to yarn E.
Rows 5-7: Starting with a prow, work 3 rows in St st.
Leaving yarn E attached to work, change to yarn C.
Repeat rows 1-7 three more times.
Cast off.

Penguin: To make up

With fastened-off yarn end, sew body halfway. With cast-on yarn end, work a gathering thread along cast-on edge and draw tightly. Sew up a little further, stuff and close body. Attach smaller eyes and beak. Seam ring without stuffing. Wrap body with the ring and connect both ends. Attach feet. Seam wings and without stuffing attach them to body. Stitch the tip of wings to body so that they wrap over the ring.
